Join Us!

We are a non-auditioned group that meets on Tuesdays in St James's United Reformed Church with both an orchestra and a choir that meet on alternate weeks (check the calendar below or the Schedule page). Doors open at 6:30pm for rehearsal to start at 6:45pm. Rehearsal will then finish by 9pm.

We play a range of music from both the stage and the screen: such as musicals, films and video games. There are no restrictions or limitations about who can join! If we have 20 flutes, we'll still accept more flute players! The important thing for us is that anyone who wants to play music gets the chance to! We do use sheet music so being able to read it will help. However, if you are joining the choir, it is not required.

We've moved to a new venue: St James's United Reformed Church! It's just a short walk from Haymarket Metro and Bus Station and has a car park very nearby!

We've now finished for the term! Thank you everyone who has taken part in the past couple of months! It's been great having people getting involved and seemingly enjoying this passion project of mine.

Thanks as well to Newcastle Arts Centre who have been a great venue to work with (especially Jackie) and I would definitely recommend them! We will be moving venues next term though, so watch this space for when we post about that!

A little introduction from the founder and musical director of NESSOC, Desmond Lau (me):

Originally from Leeds, I moved to study Music at Newcastle University as a clarinettist who also plays the piano. After graduating, I was assistant conductor for Newcastle University Wind Band for a year before becoming the conductor for Newcastle Student Orchestra and Choir where I remained in the role for 7 years. During this time, I also became the Musical Director of Wallsend Community Choir (a role I still currently hold) and Co-Musical Director of Harlekin Studio Opera.

All the groups I have worked with have been non-audtioned and, for me, it is important that anyone gets the opportunity to enjoy making music. Hopefully, you'll find me approachable and feel comfortable enough to ask questions when you have them!
